In 1907, after Hermann Minkowski's mathematical work on one of his most famous papers, Albert Einstein joked, "Since the mathematicians have grabbed hold of the theory of relativity, I myself no longer understand it."

Leadville mining stock certificates.  Collecting mining stock certificates, or scripophily, is another way of entering and/or researching the history of Leadville, Colorado.  These pieces of printed paper represent financial transactions that form part of our historical perception of the past.  Ornate engravings may attract the collector, but it historical significance that defines the ultimate intrinsic value of a mining stock certificate.

THE ANACONDA EXTENSION GOLD MINING COMPANY

Anaconda Extension GMCo 181.jpg (236366 bytes)

Issued August 18, 1892, uncancelled

Signed by H.A.W. Tabor as president

Several folds, otherwise in very good plus condition.

Horace Tabor was Leadville's Silver King.  His history became Colorado legend.

Although Tabor had tied a significant amount of his wealth to silver mining, he was convinced by several of his business partners -- D.H. Moffat, Eben Smith, R.H Reid, O.H.P. Baxter, among others -- to diversify into gold mining properties.  And thus, he invested in this Cripple Creek gold mine, not far from Moffat and Smith's Anaconda Gold Mining Company.

This is a rare certificate, even more so when issued and uncancelled.

Little Pittsburg Cons M Co.jpg (99162 bytes)

LITTLE PITTSBURGH CONSOLIDATED MINING COMPANY

Stock certificate issued October 10, 1881, uncancelled, very good condition.  Some light age signs on bottom edge.  This was the Leadville silver mine which catapulted H.A.W. Tabor into historic riches and fame.  The Little Pittsburg Mine was where Tabor found the mining partners he would invest with most of the rest of his life.  Two of these noted partners were Eben Smith and D.H. Moffat.  The Little Pittsburg became one of Leadville's exceptional silver producers; however, Tabor sold a good portion of his shares to invest in other properties, including the Hibernia Consolidated, Matchless, Mexico mines, Gothic properties, and the Fairview (Anaconda Extension) in Cripple Creek.

Miner Boy Mining Co.jpg (99637 bytes)

THE MINER BOY MINING COMPANY
